The BCSPL Boys Provincial Finals took place on Saturday, June 24th at Coquitlam Town Centre Park, with representation from Mountain United FC (Burnaby FC), Fusion FC, Coquitlam Metro-Ford SC, and Surrey United SC at the U15, U16 and U17 age group.
U15/2008 Finals: Fusion FC vs Metro-Ford SC
At The Playbook, the first game we were able to scout was the 2008 Born (U15 age group) – Fusion FC vs Metro-Ford SC. This game was electric, back-and-forth action. Both sides showed an immense amount of quality and willingness to play football. The patterns of play were phenomenal from both these groups especially in the first half of the game. You could tell both teams bought into a possession oriented style of play. Fusion truly deserved to win the game with the pressure they put on and the chances they had, but some solid defending in the back from Metro-Ford and clinical brilliance in front of goal made the difference. A few standouts from this game were Fusion #10 Aidan Bal, a technical, composed, and athletic player that can play anywhere on the pitch. #9 LCB on Metro-Ford Razik Walji, is a no nonsense defender with great size. Lastly, the star of the show, Tyler Magdilinski – who converted nearly every one of his chances to secure a last minute game winning hat-trick which sent his team to the national championship in Waterloo, ON. Final Score CMFSC 3 – 2 Fusion FC.
U16/2007 Finals: Mountain United FC vs Fusion FC
The second game we were able to scout at The Playbook was the 2007 U16 Boys age group where we saw Mountain United FC take on Fusion FC. A set piece roughly 15 minutes into the game set Mountain FC off to a solid start. The Mountain United FC team is coached by the Whitecaps FC Academy coach Nicho Agnoli, who specializes in set pieces. You can tell that this team was dangerous on dead balls judging by the way they set up, and the timing of the runs in the box. A few chances converted before half by standouts #11 Alp Atilgan and #7 Shahbod Jafary set MUFC ahead. Fusion dictated tempo through their #6 CDM Riley McColl, and tried to apply pressure in the second half. However, in this game, it was a few individual moments of defending from MUFC that made a massive difference and prevented Fusion FC from coming back into the game. Final Score – MUFC 3 – 0 Fusion FC.
U17 2006 Finals: Surrey United SC vs Mountain United SC
The last boys game that we were able to scout on BCSPL Finals weekend, was nationals seeking 2006 Born U17 age group Surrey United SC vs Mountain United SC. If you read our Top 10 article on the best 2006 Born U17 teams in the nation, you would have recognized this Surrey United team on there at #10. BCSPL league leaders with strength through their spine and extremely dangerous off set pieces. Poetically, the game started off 5 minutes in with a conversion off a set piece for Surrey SC, which the fans in the crowd would believe is standard practice. The tides started to turn as #13 on MUFC, Caden Ruby, took over the game. A great left footed finish tied the game up 1-1, then a header at the 30 minute mark to make it 2-1 and a 37 minute hat trick left Surrey absolutely stunned. It seemed as though they had hit a mental block, unaware of how to handle the situation and had no answer of how to claw back. A shocking defensive effort made it 4-1 after numbers were committed up the pitch and no one tracking on the back post. A whipped in free kick off the bar and then off the goalie’s back made it 5-1. Champs no more. MUFC dismantled SUSC and proceed to the U17 National Championships in Moncton, NB. Final Score MUFC 5 – 1 SUSC.
