The Playbook | Top Canadian Players at MLS Next Fest 2024

The 2024 MLS Next Fest, held from December 6th to December 11th at the Empire Polo Ground in Indio, California, provided yet another platform for some of North America’s brightest young soccer talents to showcase their skills. Among the hundreds of players in attendance, several Canadian players and dual-nationals caught the eye with standout performances, proving once again that Canada’s soccer talent pool continues to grow. As a leading Canadian scouting organization, FTF Canada was on the ground, keeping a close watch on these future stars. Below, we’ve highlighted the Canadian players who left a lasting impression and why we believe they’re names to watch in the years ahead.

Van Parker – Real Salt Lake U19

A 2009-born forward playing 2-3 years up with the RSL U19 team, Van Parker showcased his tenacity, intelligence, and work ethic throughout the tournament. His high soccer IQ and relentless drive made him a constant threat in the attacking third, and his nose for goal is second to none. Van’s maturity on the pitch makes him one to monitor for Canada’s upcoming U17 World Cup cycles, especially now that the tournament will occur annually.

Marius Aiyenero – LAFC U19

Marius Aiyenero, recently called into the Canadian Men’s National Team (CMNT) U17 camp, demonstrated exactly why he’s highly rated. Whether deployed centrally or out wide, Marius consistently found ways to impact the game offensively, showing a knack for scoring goals. Already signed to a professional contract with LAFC 2, Marius is a forward whose development trajectory could take him to even greater heights in the near future.

Victor Fung – Inter Miami U19

Victor Fung, a 2007-born center-back, was a model of consistency at MLS Next Fest. Representing Inter Miami U19, Victor impressed with his technical ability, decision-making, and improved physicality since we last saw him. Rumors of a verbal commitment to Stanford University further highlight his potential. If true, Stanford has secured a top-tier player for its storied NCAA program.

Clovis Archange – Orlando City U19

Clovis Archange was a defensive rock for Orlando City U19, arguably the best U19 team in the league. A left-sided center-back, Clovis combined his physical presence with defensive stability, excelling in high-pressure situations. His performance sets up an intriguing competition for Canada’s U17 national team, where he’ll contend with CF Montreal’s Sergei Kozlovskiy, another highly-rated prospect in the same position.

Nael Kane – CF Montreal U19

Nael Kane was a constant offensive spark for CF Montreal U19, excelling in 1v1 situations and creating opportunities out wide and in the half-spaces. Having joined CF Montreal full-time at the start of 2024, his technical and tactical development in less than a year has been remarkable. Nael’s ability to consistently challenge defenders and unlock defenses makes him one of the most exciting attacking prospects at this level.

Rayan Elloumi – Vancouver Whitecaps U19

Rayan Elloumi had a standout performance, scoring four goals in three games for Vancouver Whitecaps U19. The 2007-born striker’s clinical finishing makes him arguably the most lethal amateur player in Canada right now. Despite being relatively new to the target striker role, his rapid development and high ceiling make him a can’t-miss prospect for Canadian soccer fans.

Zachary Zalewski – Columbus Crew U16

Zachary Zalewski was fantastic for Columbus Crew U16 at MLS Next Fest. A pure left-footed maestro, Zachary scored a stunning goal against Toronto FC U16, showcasing his intelligence and composure on the ball. While typically deployed as a midfielder, he spent significant time playing as a right winger during the event, where his ability to cut inside onto his left foot and create chances caused defenders endless problems. Zachary’s knack for unlocking defenses makes him a key player to watch as he continues to develop.

Gabriel Pandolfo – CF Montreal U16

Gabriel Pandolfo is the latest in a line of strong goalkeepers from the CF Montreal academy. The 2009-born shot-stopper impressed not only with his size and shot-stopping ability but also with his distribution and composure playing out from the back. Gabriel’s potential is undeniable, and he seems destined to represent Canada at the youth level, with the possibility of one day earning a senior call-up.

Devonte Simon – Toronto FC U16

Devonte Simon, a 2010-born winger, was electric for Toronto FC U16. His speed and dynamism down the flanks created havoc for defenders, and despite playing up a year, he dominated his opponents with ease. As Devonte continues to refine his technical skills, he could become a major attacking force in the MLS Next league and beyond.

Elijah Roche – Toronto FC U18

Elijah Roche was his usual dependable self at MLS Next Fest, anchoring the TFC U18 backline with his defensive instincts and technical skill. His ability to shut down attackers stood out, but adding long- and medium-range passing to his game could elevate him to the next level. Nonetheless, Elijah remains a key defensive prospect for the future.

Grayson Mackkinon – Toronto FC U15

Grayson Mackkinon’s mobility and work rate stood out for Toronto FC U15. Comfortable under pressure, Grayson consistently made smart decisions in tight spaces and ensured smooth ball progression for his team. As he continues to develop, adding more influence in the final third will be key to unlocking his full potential as a complete midfielder.

Conclusion

The performances of Canadian players and dual-nationals at the 2024 MLS Next Fest reaffirm the immense talent and potential within Canada’s soccer pipeline. From goal-scorers like Rayan Elloumi and Marius Aiyenero to defensive stalwarts like Victor Fung and Clovis Archange, these players are paving the way for a bright future for Canadian soccer. At FTF Canada, we’re proud to highlight these rising stars and will continue to follow their journeys as they strive for success at the highest levels of the sport. With talent like this, the future of Canadian soccer looks brighter than ever.
